Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, popularly known as G. D. Naidu, was born on March 23, 1893, in Kalangal near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, rising from humble beginnings to become a legendary innovator. Despite having only primary school education, he became a self-taught genius whose inventions and industries transformed the technological landscape of South India.
Often called the "Edison of India," G. D. Naidu made pioneering contributions to electrical, mechanical, automobile, and agricultural engineering. He is credited with developing India's first indigenous electric motor, establishing numerous industries and educational institutions that laid the foundation for Coimbatore's growth as an industrial hub, and was recognized with the prestigious Padma Bhushan for science and industry.
